Botanical Name: sodium bicarbonate
General Info: Baking soda is a popular baking ingredient. It gives foods like bread, cakes, muffins, and cookies a light, fluffy texture. Used for cleaning, DIY toothpaste, skincare, deodorant, and more.
Historical Uses: In 3500 BC, ancient Egyptians use natron (primarily comprised of sodium carbonate) as a soap-like cleaning agent. They also used it to make mummies. In 1843, Alfred Bird, a British chemist, made the first version of baking powder to help his wife, who was allergic to yeast.
Medicinal Properties: Used to relieve heartburn, sour stomach, or acid indigestion by neutralizing excess stomach acid. When used for this purpose, it is said to belong to the group of medicines called antacids. It may be used to treat the symptoms of stomach or duodenal ulcers. Also used to boost exercise performance, whiten your teeth, slow bone loss and build muscles.

Precautions: Don’t take baking soda internally within 2 hours of other medications. When the baking soda lowers stomach acid, it can slow the rate at which your body absorbs some medicines and change the way others work. Don’t give it to a child under 6 unless your pediatrician tells you to.
